Ausstellung: Stimmen Europas

In Europa, einem Kontinent voller Kunst, Ideen, Widersprüche und einer reichen Verschmelzung verschiedener Kulturen, wird im Herbst 2024 ein neues europäisches Parlament gewählt. Die bevorstehenden Europawahlen soll dabei als Chance verstanden werden, unsere gemeinsame Stimme erklingen zu lassen. Die Bewegung „DiEM25“ in Zusammenarbeit mit der Inititative „Mind My Business“ und dem Kulturzentrum Göttingen möchten in einem Fotoprojekt das Gefühl eines vereinten Europas zum Ausdruck bringen, das über bloße wirtschaftliche und politische Ambitionen hinausgeht. Durch die Linse der Fotografie wollen wir einfangen, wie sich Europäer selbst sehen, insbesondere aus der Perspektive einer internationalen Kleinstadt im Herzen Europas, Göttingen.

Unsere Ausstellung zielt darauf ab, die Gesichter und Stimmen der vielfältigen Bevölkerung Europas – des Demos – zu enthüllen, die nächstes Jahr die Mitglieder des Europäischen Parlaments wählen werden. Wir möchten daher in unserer Ausstellung Einzelpersonen als vielschichtige Wesen darstellen, die Wünsche, Ängste und Hoffnungen haben. Es soll eine Erinnerung daran werden, dass das, was nächstes Jahr auf dem Spiel steht, nicht nur Politiker betrifft, sondern jeden Einzelnen.

Mit Hilfe von analoger Fotografie mit Doppelbelichtungen verwandelt unsere Ausstellung die gemeinsame Währung – die nur symbolische Baukunst darstellt, während unsere Bilder die echte europäische Architektur repräsentiert. Durch diese Technik verschmelzen wir die tatsächlichen Wunder der Architektur mit den Menschen und zeigen den echten Wert Europas auf. Die Tiefe und Individualität jedes Porträts wird durch prägnante Texte verstärkt, die persönliche Empfindungen gegenüber diesem Kontinent artikulieren.

Dieses künstlerische Unterfangen unterstreicht die Verbundenheit der Menschen mit ihren Heimatländern und verdeutlicht die Essenz der europäischen Vielfalt und Einheit. Die Ausstellung zielt darauf ab, das Nachdenken über ihre Verbindung bei den Betrachtern hervorzurufen und betont, dass die bevorstehenden Europawahlen mit der Geschichte und den Emotionen jedes einzelnen Bürgers in Resonanz stehen sollte.

Unsere Absicht ist es, die Stimmen zur Europawahl zu stärken und ein lebendiges Bild des komplexen Geflechts europäischer Identitäten zu schaffen. Die Ausstellung soll dazu inspirieren, sich aktiv zu engagieren und an der Gestaltung der gemeinsamen Zukunft Europas teilzunehmen.

Exhibition: Voices of Europe

Europe is rich in artworks, full of ideas and contradictions, and shaped by the coexistence of different cultures. The elections for the new EU Parliament coming up in June 2024 present an opportunity to make our diverse voices heard. On 15 February,  the DiEM25-Göttingen collective in collaboration with the "Mind My Business" citizens' initiative, will open an exhibition that expresses the image of a united Europe. Going beyond mere economic and political concerns, the exhibited photos aim to convey a self-image of Europeans, in this iteration from the perspective of citizens in a small multicultural city in the heart of Europe: Göttingen.

In presenting  portraits of members of the European demos (in the sense of the ancient Greek δῆμος, dḗmos), the exhibition seeks to give a face and a voice to those voting for the upcoming EU Parliament. The photos intend to show people with all their desires, fears, and hopes, revealing that the 2024 European elections are primarily about the people, rather than the politicians.

The portraits will be complemented with real-life images from the lives of the depicted Europeans — unlike the Euro banknotes, which are printed with unspecific, stylized examples of European architecture. Through double exposure, these European edifices and other places that hold meaning for the photo subjects merge with the portraits, emphasizing the most valuable aspect of Europe: its people. Each profound and individualized portrait will be accompanied by a concise statement expressing the subjects’ thoughts, feelings, associations, with Europe.

This art project underscores people's connection with their respective home countries, thus highlighting the diversity of Europe and the commonalities among EU residents. The exhibition invites reflection on one's own sense of being European while emphasizing that the upcoming European elections are directly linked to the emotions and personal life stories of each person.

As living images of the complex network of European identities, the photo montages aim to give voice to the people, while also motivating the observers to actively participate in shaping the shared future of the peoples of Europe.

The exhibition will be open through 12 March.
