The democratic transformation of Europe, which our movement has committed to, is a huge challenge. It requires energetic political action across the board – activism that goes beyond the occasional ZOOM call or the regulars' table meeting of one's affinity group. One (certainly not entirely unjustified) statement we keep encountering is that "DiEM25 takes place primarily online."
While the blessings of the internet enable us as a movement to network across Europe and the world, to work collaboratively on our policy proposals and to plan actions together, we, the authors of this fundraising text, are nevertheless of the opinion that the results of this digital exchange should be reflected in the physical world more often. This holds true especially when it comes to our home country of Germany – arguably one of the most important battlegrounds for the future of Europe.
DiEM25 has made little progress in Germany since the campaign for the 2019 European elections. Neither the number of our members on the ground, nor the number of active local groups (DiEM25 Spontaneous Collectives or simply called DSCs) has grown significantly. And our political goals and demands – be it in the area of increasing global warming and social inequality, a barely more than professed European democracy or the humanitarian crisis at Europe's external borders – are further than ever from being met.
Innovative ideas, a visionary programme and a great deal of idealism - all this is necessary, but far from sufficient to make a lasting difference. What is needed is a concrete plan for implementation. The world is crying out for change and DiEM25 is here to bring it. It is out of this conviction that we, the members of the DSC Frankfurt and DSC Mittelhessen, now want to take the next crucial step towards implementing our Progressive Agenda for Europe – here in our region, in the beautiful central German state of Hesse.
We have spent the past weeks and months organising a statewide series of events that is entirely designed to strengthen our movement in Hesse, attract more members and create new DSCs. During the hot phase of the federal election race this year, we will visit a different Hessian city every Saturday for ten weeks in a row and spread the message(s) of DiEM25! All of this taking place in a highly politicised atmosphere, thus maximally conductive to our intentions.
This project (we proudly call it the DiEM25 Hessentour) is, of course, associated with considerable effort and expense: Hall rental, technical equipment, promotional material; the current pandemic has made the search for adequate venues more expensive than it probably would have been under "normal" circumstances.
